Protect Your Health: Book Your Breast Screening Appointment
Why Breast Screening matters
Breast cancer develops when cells in the breast grow in an uncontrolled way, screening detects this. The earlier it’s found, the better the chances of successful treatment and survival.
Thanks to early detection and improved treatments, more people are surviving breast cancer than ever before.
Yet, across the country, over 40% of women invited to a free breast screening appointment don’t attend. Taking part in breast screening could save your life — or the life of someone you love.
What is Breast Screening?
You will be invited to screening automatically if you are...
- registered with a GP
- registered as a female
- aged 50 to 70
However, breast screening is for anyone with breast tissue who may be at risk — and that includes some trans and non-binary people.
🏳️🌈Trans men and non-binary people assigned female at birth:
- If you have not had chest reconstruction (top surgery) and are aged 50–70, you may still have breast tissue and should consider screening.
- You can request a quiet or private appointment at the start or end of a clinic by calling your screening centre.
🏳️🌈Trans women and non-binary people assigned male at birth:
- Long-term hormone therapy can increase your risk of breast cancer.
- If you are aged 50–70 and registered as female, you’ll be invited automatically.
- If you’re registered as male, speak to your GP about referral options for screening.
Know Your Body, Know the Signs
Even if you attend screenings, it’s important to be breast aware. Look out for:
🌸 Changes in size, shape, or feel
🌸 Lumps or thickening
🌸 Skin changes, dimpling, or rashes
🌸 Nipple changes or discharge
If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait — contact your GP straight away.
